Filming a wedding at Fairyhill in Gower

Having filmed several weddings at Fairyhill, it is a venue I always enjoy returning to. Few South Wales wedding venues offer the same contrast between the historic character of a Georgian country house and the clean, contemporary design of the glass-fronted K Room.

Set within the Gower countryside, Fairyhill provides a varied backdrop throughout the day. The house, gardens, woodland, terrace and modern reception space each have a different visual character, allowing a wedding film to develop naturally as the celebration moves from preparations to ceremony, drinks, dinner and the evening party.

What makes Fairyhill so distinctive on film?

The contrast between the main house and the K Room is one of Fairyhill’s strongest features.

The Georgian rooms provide warmth, texture and intimacy during the morning preparations. They are particularly suited to quiet observational moments: final details being arranged, conversations between family members and the mixture of anticipation and excitement before the ceremony.

The K Room offers an entirely different atmosphere. Its curved, glass-fronted design brings the surrounding grounds into the ceremony and reception, creating a strong sense of place. Wide views can establish the architecture and landscape, while closer compositions preserve the expressions and reactions that make the ceremony personal.

Filming in a glass-fronted space requires careful positioning and exposure, particularly when the daylight outside is much brighter than the interior. I take this into account when choosing camera positions so that the couple, their guests and the landscape all remain part of the story without the filming becoming intrusive.

Later in the day, the K Room changes character again. Reflections, evening light and the atmosphere of the dance floor give the reception a more energetic, contemporary look that contrasts beautifully with the traditional house.

My favourite locations for wedding footage at Fairyhill

The terrace is an ideal place to capture the first few minutes after the ceremony. Guests naturally gather there with drinks and canapés, creating opportunities to film hugs, congratulations and relaxed conversations without directing anybody.

The lawn and the view back towards the house provide a classic Fairyhill establishing shot. They also give couples enough room to walk and interact naturally during a short portrait session rather than remaining in one fixed pose.

The edges of the woodland and the quieter paths around the grounds are particularly useful when a couple wants a few minutes away from the main celebration. These locations create intimate footage while still feeling connected to Fairyhill’s wider landscape.

Inside, I look for smaller details that connect the film to the venue: the texture of the Georgian rooms, the changing light through the K Room windows and the transition from the calm of the daytime celebrations to the energy of the evening.

How does my filmmaking style complement Fairyhill?

My approach is natural, cinematic and authentic, which works particularly well at Fairyhill.

The venue already has a strong identity, so it does not need to be over-staged. I use its architecture, grounds and available light to give the film a cinematic sense of scale, but the people remain at the centre of the story.

I allow most moments to unfold naturally and provide only light direction when it is helpful. This means couples can enjoy the venue and spend time with their guests rather than disappearing for a long, heavily posed filming session.

The vows, speeches and natural sound from the day are just as important as the images. Combining those voices with footage of the house, the K Room and the surrounding Gower countryside creates a film that feels specific to both the couple and the place they chose to celebrate.

Advice for couples planning a Fairyhill wedding

Leave a little breathing room in the schedule after the ceremony. Ten or fifteen unhurried minutes on the terrace and in the gardens will often produce more genuine footage than a tightly controlled portrait session.

It is also worth keeping a small amount of time available later in the day. If the evening light is particularly beautiful, a brief walk outside can add a completely different atmosphere to the film without taking you away from your guests for long.

You do not need to rely on perfect weather for Fairyhill to look beautiful. The Georgian interiors and the glass-fronted K Room provide plenty of strong indoor filming opportunities, while short breaks in the weather can still be used for exterior establishing shots and portraits.

If you are considering travelling to the Gower coastline for additional photographs or video, build the journey and a weather contingency into your timeline. Fairyhill’s own grounds already offer considerable variety, so an off-site session should only be included when it genuinely adds something to your plans.

Finally, let your photographer and videographer know which parts of Fairyhill attracted you to the venue. Whether it was the house, the gardens, the K Room or the wider Gower setting, this helps us ensure those elements become a meaningful part of your finished film.
